Auburn, WA’s Veterans Parade Honors Those Who Served and Celebrates Their Service
News
On the Saturday before Veterans Day, Auburn’s Main Street comes alive with marching bands, military color guards, veterans, and families for the largest Veterans Parade west of the Mississippi.
People often bring folding chairs to save their spots days ahead of time. Many come back each year to honor those who served. Since 1965, Auburn, WA’s Veterans Parade has brought the community together to recognize military service and the sacrifices made by veterans and active-duty members.
The 2026 parade will be held on Saturday, November 7th, at 11 a.m. Organizers expect over 120 parade entries and thousands of spectators, carrying on a tradition that is now a key part of Auburn’s community identity.
A Tradition That Has Grown for 61 Years
Auburn, WA, has hosted its Veterans Parade since 1965. What began as a small local event has become one of the country's largest parades of its kind. Auburn has also been named a Regional Site for the 2026 national Veterans Day celebration.
The goal has always been the same: to honor veterans and active military members. Over the years, organizers have worked closely with military branches and veteran organizations to make the parade happen each year.
The tradition has continued through many changes, including during the COVID-19 pandemic, when organizers created a modified parade that traveled through Auburn. For the 50th anniversary, the city added tribute banners along Main Street, which still serve as a visible reminder of residents who have served.
Hundreds of Participants Bring the Parade to Life
This year's parade is expected to include about 4,000 participants, more than 10 marching bands, and representatives from military branches and veteran organizations. The lineup allows spectators to recognize service across generations.
Some highlights to look forward to:
- America's First Corps Band and other marching bands
- Military color guards, JROTC units, and veteran service organizations
- Military vehicles, a Huey helicopter, and model patrol boats
- Flyovers planned by the King County Sheriff's Office and the 446th Airlift Wing
- A static military display featuring equipment and participating organizations
The parade travels down Main Street, starting near Washington Elementary School and ending at City Hall. Activities will also take place throughout the day, giving everyone more ways to join the community’s celebration including:
- Community Breakfast, from 7:00 am until 9:00 pm, at the Auburn Senior Activity Center
- Remembrance Ceremony and Lighting of the Flame from 9.45 am until 10.15 am at Veterans Memorial Park
- Open House at the VFW, from 12:00 pm until 5:00 pm
- Lions Veterans Luncheon at 1:30 pm, held at Merrill Gardens of Auburn
Community Relationships Keep the Tradition Going
The parade relies on military representatives, veterans, local groups, and city staff. Their teamwork reflects strong relationships and a shared commitment to honoring those who served.
“Every year, we see how much this event means to Auburn residents and the surrounding region. Families come out to watch, veterans participate in the parade, and community organizations help make the observance possible. That continued involvement is what keeps this tradition meaningful,” said Amanda Valdez, Special Events Coordinator for Auburn Parks, Arts & Recreation.
Jenn Francis, Auburn's Economic Development Manager, also points out how long-standing community events shape Auburn’s identity. The parade brings residents and visitors together, honors local service, and offers a welcoming way to learn about the people who call Auburn home.
“Events like the Veterans Parade reflect the community connections that make Auburn distinctive. They give residents a reason to come together and allow visitors to experience the pride Auburn takes in honoring those who serve.”
