A Week in the Life of Auburn Economic Development from Emerson's Perspective

Economic development in Auburn is not limited to long-term planning. Each week involves direct work with business owners, property managers, and community leaders. From responding to late-night questions to visiting businesses face-to-face, Auburn's economic development team is focused on listening, solving problems, and making connections that drive growth.

As Economic Development Coordinator, Emerson Folker leads Auburn's business recruitment and downtown support efforts. His weekly work includes:

  • Building new and maintaining existing relationships with the Downtown Businesses
  • Assisting aspiring entrepreneurs with what they need to succeed
  • Identifying opportunities for retail, restaurants, and entertainment.

These activities and priorities often originate from the mayor and city council, with support from feedback from property and business owners.

“A big part of what I do is connecting businesses with the right people, whether that's inside the city or with outside resources, so they can focus on growing instead of getting stuck in the process.”

Daily Tasks Connect Directly to Business Needs

Economic development work starts early. Emerson begins most days by answering emails from business owners, often sent after hours when many have the free time from their busy days.

After lunch, he often visits businesses downtown or connects with local entrepreneurs, where he checks on operations and learns about the needs of business owners that require city support or involvement. The day ends by closing out meetings and responding to outstanding requests.

Local Businesses Count on Hands-On Support

Auburn businesses frequently call on Emerson for practical guidance. Sometimes, it's a technical matter, such as questions on permits, grants, or local industry connections. Other times, its companies from outside Auburn who are looking for available land or buildings. In either case, Emerson acts as a connector, ensuring businesses receive timely answers and resources.

Oskana Lusnikova, owner of Pie Styles Bakery, had this to say about Emerson when she was operating her business and trying to expand. "They [Auburn Economic Development] always helped, especially Emerson," Lusnikova said. "He tells me about every program. When we had a problem with signage, he shared solutions. That kind of help makes all the difference."

Emerson often says, “My favorite part of this role is working with entrepreneurs. Their passion is contagious, and helping them succeed keeps me motivated every day.”

Balancing Stakeholder Priorities Requires Collaboration

Economic development work is shaped by multiple perspectives. Direction from the mayor and council often guides priorities, while input from property owners and business leaders helps define specific needs.

One example of this level of collaboration was with the rollout of Auburn's food truck program. It emphasized how diverse interests and concerns can be brought into alignment, reassuring stakeholders and leading to a program that has gained community support.

Economic Development Builds Auburn's Foundation for Growth

Supporting businesses requires consistent, hands-on involvement. Whether it is a business visit downtown, a recruitment call, or resolving a process issue, Emerson is committed to ensuring the city remains a place where businesses can thrive.
